A tartan volleyball court is a project-specific synthetic sports surface commonly constructed using polyurethane and compatible resilient materials over a prepared concrete or asphalt base.

The word “tartan” does not define one universal volleyball flooring system. Different projects may use dense PU coatings, cushioned constructions, rubber-based resilient layers or other approved synthetic systems.

The selected system should match the facility level, indoor or outdoor environment, base condition, free-zone requirements, expected use, maintenance plan and required testing.

Specify the complete court build-up, not only the description “tartan,” a surface color or one generic thickness.

Synthetic Volleyball Flooring Is Project and Approval Dependent

Volleyball Lines, Attack Zones and Service Areas

Boundary Lines

Two sidelines and two end lines are drawn inside the court’s 18 × 9 m dimensions.

Centre Line

The centre-line axis divides the court into two equal 9 × 9 m playing areas.

Attack Lines

The rear edge is positioned three metres from the centre-line axis.

Front Zones

The front zone lies between the centre line and attack line.

Back Zones

The rear court lies between the attack line and the end line.

Service Zones

Each service zone is nine metres wide behind the relevant end line.

Line Width

Court lines are five centimetres wide and should contrast clearly with the floor.

Multi-Sport Lines

Use separate colors and avoid unnecessary overlap with other sports.

As-Built Layout

Record the approved dimensions, colors and equipment locations.

Final markings should be set out from the approved court drawing rather than copied visually from another facility.
