“Tartan” is a widely used commercial term for polyurethane and rubber-based sports surfaces. The term can refer to several different court and running-track constructions, so procurement should be based on the complete system rather than the word tartan alone.

A PU sports surface may combine polyurethane primers, PU binders, SBR rubber granules, EPDM granules, pore-sealing materials, self-levelling polyurethane, spray coatings, textured top layers and line-marking paint.

The correct construction depends on the primary sport, indoor or outdoor exposure, required permeability, base condition, expected traffic, project budget and any specified performance testing.

A running track and a ball-sports court may both be called tartan, but their layer construction, texture, markings and technical requirements can be substantially different.
